Cloud Strife cosplay guide: costume, wig, sword and harness
Cloud is one of the most cosplayed characters in the world, which raises the bar and the amount of reference material available. This guide covers what the costume has to get right, how the hair is actually built, and the two things that ruin most Cloud builds: the wig and the sword.

What the costume has to get right
Cloud's Remake and Rebirth design is a stack of layers rather than a single garment. A fitted vest sits over the torso, a belt and suspender rig crosses the chest, a single pauldron sits on the left shoulder, and studded gauntlets cover the forearms. The silhouette is deliberately top-heavy — broad at the shoulders, tapered at the waist. If the shoulders and waist are unstructured, the whole costume reads flat, which is why cheap versions of this outfit look wrong even when the colours are right.
- The left pauldron — the single most identifiable piece. It needs to hold its shape and sit level, not tilt forward.
- The chest harness — belts that cross the vest. Where they cross changes the whole torso line.
- Studded gauntlets and wristguards — these carry a lot of the detail at photo distance.
- The waist rig — belt, waistband and suspenders, which is what creates the taper.
The wig is the hardest part
Cloud's hair is the single biggest differentiator between a good Cosplay and a costume. It needs volume, it needs to hold spikes under its own weight, and it needs to survive a full day of being bumped into. The technique experienced cosplayers use is fairly consistent:
- 1Start with a heat-resistant wig in light or ice blonde, and buy a thick one. Thin wigs cannot hold Cloud's shape — you will need to sew in extra wefts.
- 2Crimp the fibres before styling. Crimping adds friction and volume, which is what lets the spikes stay up.
- 3Work section by section with a strong spiking glue plus freezing spray, locking each spike with a cool blow-dryer as you go.
- 4For the large central spikes, many cosplayers hide a piece of craft foam or a short wire armature inside the core so it cannot droop.
Contacts
Cloud's eyes are a bright Mako blue — vivid ice-blue or aqua, not a natural blend. Buy cosmetic lenses from a certified supplier, follow the wear time on the packaging, and never sleep in them. If you have never worn cosmetic lenses before, practise inserting them at home before the convention.
The Buster Sword
The sword is roughly four to five feet long, and a badly built one will end your weekend by lunchtime on day one. The lightweight approach is a PVC or plywood core inside extruded polystyrene, skinned with EVA foam for clean edges and painted with metallic acrylics and a black wash. The materia slots near the hilt are usually clear resin casts or painted acrylic domes.
What a made-to-measure Cloud costume includes
| Piece | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Pants | Wide-leg cut, sits under the belt rig |
| Vest | The base layer the harness crosses over |
| Waistband + suspenders + belt | Creates the waist taper and holds the harness |
| Gloves + wristguards | Studded forearm detail |
| Shoulder guards | The left pauldron — the key silhouette piece |
| Bracelets + armbands | Small details that read at photo distance |
| Ribbon | Neck detail |
| Finger cots | Often left out of cheaper versions |
Shoes are not included, and neither is the sword — both are usually bought or built separately. Everything above is cut to your measurements rather than a stock size, which matters most at the harness: a chest rig that is the wrong length will not sit level no matter how you adjust it.
If you are cosplaying in a group
Final Fantasy VII is one of the best group cosplay franchises because the silhouettes are so distinct — Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Zack and Sephiroth are recognisable from across a hall and need almost no explanation. Groups usually split the build work by difficulty: Cloud is heavy on props and hair, Tifa and Aerith are fabric-led, and Sephiroth is mostly about coat length and height.

Common questions
How much of a Cloud Strife cosplay can you buy ready-made?
The costume itself is available complete — twelve pieces including the pauldron and gauntlets, made to your measurements. The wig and the Buster Sword are almost always bought or built separately, because both need to be matched to your head size and your convention's prop rules.
Do I need the sword to be recognisable?
No. Cloud is identifiable from the pauldron, harness and hair alone. Plenty of cosplayers leave the sword at home for crowded convention days and only bring it for photoshoots.
How long does a made-to-measure Cloud costume take?
Around two to three weeks to build, plus shipping. If you have a convention date, contact the maker before ordering so the timeline can be confirmed.
